Leadership Development Services
Leadership Development Services (LDS) assists volunteer sector organizations to achieve their full potential by providing training and support in the areas of governance and management.
One of the ways that United Way strives to realize its vision is through offering Leadership Development Services, a program that offers governance and management support to ALL organizations in the voluntary sector, not only those that receive program funding.
Closed Training
Leadership Development Services (LDS) offers individual board training, which we call closed training, as it is not open to participants from any other organization. Usually the President and Executive Director meet with the volunteer trainer(s) and the Program Manager to discuss the specific needs of the board. One or more training modules is developed for and delivered to the organization. This is the most effective way for boards to develop, as everyone is "on the same page". Training can cover such areas as Board Roles and Responsibilities, Board Models, Meeting Management etc.
As well, LDS offers limited facilitation services for such areas as strategic planning and visioning.
Executive Director Learning Circle
The ED Learning Circle is a professional facilitated peer discussion session held between October and June. It is designed for 8 - 10 seasoned EDs who would like to learn and share best practices with each other, overcome isolation and revitalize their leadership. Applications will be accepted until September 25th, 2009.
Needs Assessment
LDS offers a self-evaluation tool for boards of directors. Board members and senior staff complete a questionnaire. From this information, a report is generated outlining the strengths and weaknesses of the organization, as per the opinions of its members.
Open Training
Open training is open to any volunteer or staff member of any voluntary sector organization. In order to provide access to the entire voluntary sector, registration is limited to TWO paid staff of any one organization, as well as its volunteers.
A small fee is charged to help sustain the program, however, no one will be turned away if they cannot pay - please speak to the Community Initiatives Manager.
Unless otherwise indicated, all Open Training is held at United Way/Centraide, 105 Elm Street, Suite E-6, Sudbury.
Workshops are often offered in a series, with a certificate given to those who attend the entire series.
Due to unique challenges facing the Sudbury community, all staff will be assisting with campaign this fall. Open workshops will resume in January.
