Labour Supporting Women on "Tampon Tuesday"
SUDBURY, ON – Union members in our community will have an opportunity to support an effort to provide women in need with menstrual hygiene products at a “Tampon Tuesday” event planned for Tuesday, February 28th 2017. Periods are a fact of life. For women living in poverty, there is an added challenge of acquiring these products. For women who are experiencing homelessness, it is an even bigger challenge. We want to help!
Labour Community Services is a joint program between the United Way Centraide Canada and the Canadian Labour Congress, locally implemented by our United Way and the Sudbury and District Labour Council (SDLC). We all work to bring people together to build our community. The SDLC represents approximately 10 000 workers belonging to 47 unions in our community.
Union members are invited to come out for a social evening of fun and learning. The price of admission is one unopened box of menstrual hygiene product! Representatives from community agencies will be there to talk about some of the challenges women living in poverty face in our community.
“We want to ensure that all women have access to these needed products. This event is about empowering women, bringing labour and the community together, helping each other out and just having an opportunity to learn and socialize together, in a relaxed and inclusive environment” says Nicole Beaulieu, Director of Labour Community Services, United Way/Centraide Sudbury and Nipissing Districts.
“Unions and their members make a difference in the community every day. Whether it’s financial contributions to United Ways and a myriad of other community resources and services, packing knapsacks with school supplies for kids who would otherwise go without, or feeding thousands of hungry souls at Christmas, unions stand up for their communities. This is just one other way we are hoping to make a difference right here at home”, adds Beaulieu.
Local affiliated Women’s Committees and union members are encouraged to attend this event and will have the opportunity to have input in planning future similar events. We hope to see you there!
